Christina Derry Takes Silver Medal at U. S. Roller Skating
Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska
"Raise your left arm.....strong free leg.....chin a little
higher...." are typical comments from coach Findlay as Christina
practices for the USA Roller Sports National Championships. Christina
Derry, a 7th grade student in the Burns- Ridenour-Bronson
team class at Mill Creek Middle School, earned a Silver Medal
in Ladies JO Figure Skating at the National Roller Skating Championship
Competition in Lincoln, Nebraska this August. "It’s a lot
of hard work, but a lot of fun too, especially standing on the
podium at Nationals and winning the silver medal, that was cool," commented
Christina. She is a member of the Rollerama II Roller Skating
Club in Brighton Michigan, where she trains in Dance, and Figure
skating. Christina also trains in Figures at United Michigan
Skating Club in Flushing, and in Precision Team at Riverside
Arena in Livonia. She had to qualify to skate the national event
by winning a placement at the five-state Great Lakes Regional
Meet which took place in June in Burton, Michigan. Christina
then skated against 36 other qualifiers in her division, from
nine regions across the country, for the championship. Her coaches,
Kent Findlay and Herb Wright, were justifiably proud. "Christina
worked very hard, focused on her skating and did her very best," said
Findlay, who coached her at the national championship.
The skaters must first go through an elimination set of figures,
then nine finalists skate a second set of figures to determine
the final championship placements. The judges look for form,
precision, and ability to trace the figure exactly. "It takes
a great amount of strength, muscle coordination, and balance
to do these figures" said Chuck Derry, Christina’s dad, "and
hours and hours of practice." Christina has to get up at 4:30
AM on weekends, for lessons, and on week nights, lessons and
practice can last from after school until 7:00 or 8:00 at night.
She, like many of the competitive skaters, does a lot of her
homework in the car while traveling to and from the rinks. Most
of the artistic competitive skaters maintain grade point averages
of 3.0 or higher and Christina is no exception with a grade point
average of 3.9. Her teacher in 6th grade was Mrs. Bev Hill and
her Physical Education teacher was Ms. Dee Braden who showed
one of Christina’s competition tapes to her class. "I think
it is a wonderful sport for Christina, and I want to share this
with her classmates" Braden said.
This year Christina won 11 placements, 3 trophies, and 5 medals
in State, Regional, Invitational, and National Championship Competitions.
Next year she will be competing in Dance, Figures, and Creative
In line Solo. "My goal is to win at the World Championships" said
Christina, "and it would be really cool to have a skating team
from Dexter Schools." Considering the commitment Christina has
made to her sport, she could very well reach her World championship
goal.
